Because of the area's high elevation, snow typically remains until July. Trail conditions will be reassessed on July 5th for a potential July 7th opening.īrainard Lake Recreation Area is set in a glacially carved valley offering visitors spectacular panoramic views of Brainard Lake, surrounding subalpine forest, and high peaks along the Continental Divide. Opening these popular trailheads before proper conditions are met could lead to resource damage in the highly fragile ecosystem. This delayed opening is needed for the large snow drifts to melt out and allow Forest Service personnel to assess trail conditions, such as hazard trees and snow-covered bridges. Due to the unprecedented snowpack in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, parking at Niwot, Mitchell Lake, and Long Lake trailheads will remain closed through the holiday weekend.
